When I was in London and Paris this past Spring I enjoyed the Fine Art Museums totally engaged and enthralled with the whole idea of being in the presence of original art in the London Portrait Gallery, The Louvre Italian Masters, The Place de Versailles and on and on. Everywhere one turned, in every little cubbyhole there was detail ‘abundante’.
The numbers were vast , painting after painting, portraits galore, each a masterpiece in their own right. Some you could almost touch, others were a safe distance away, nevertheless, it was totally overwhelming and humbling.
The problem I found was that I felt I could not pay equal homage to all, as the sheer numbers of Masters were mind boggling, my feet were sore, people were splayed out from exhaustion on the few bits of seating provided. It wasn’t only me. The ‘Mona Lisa’ was one of the smaller pieces, the ‘Crowning of Josephine by Napolean’ absolutely huge covering a whole wall top to bottom, east to west.
The most startling piece to me, was a smallish painting in the middle of one gallery, on a wall that divided two paths, by itself, no grand glory, no security and from what I can remember I could touch it with my nose. I initially whisked by trying to scan as much as I could of the huge gallery like a kid in a candy store , pinching myself that finally I have the opportunity to see firsthand all that I have studied in the past, snapping photo after photo knowing full well my memory would lose details from being bombarded with so much stimuli,
to find myself halting and backtracking.
It was the original oil painting of the
Grande Odalisque painted by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1814)
an image used quite profusely in TV and print advertising over the years and should be quite familiar to many.
Here it was, lonely, alone, the ORIGINAL, with only I casting my amorous gaze upon such a lovely creature in wonderment of the story it could tell…
During the 19th century, odalisques became common fantasy figures in the artistic movement known as Orientalism, being featured in many erotic paintings from that era.”
I could wistfully be your Odalisque, my figure is certainly asimilar to such… gladly, willingly.
